Every city in the U.S. has at least one art gallery, and most have two or three. There are over 30,000 museums and art galleries in the country. Some of these stand out above the rest as the best galleries in the U.S. They have been designated as the best because of the number of visitors who walk through their doors each year. There may be less well-known art galleries in the country with very good displays, but without the large number of visitors, they will not be designated as top museums.

The top art museum and gallery in the U.S., based on 2010 results, is the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It ranks Number 3, coming in after Number 1, Louvre in Paris and Number 2, British Museum in London. 5.217 million visitors came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2010. The most visited work of art was by Picasso, which ranked Number 8 of the top 30 exhibitions in the world, as per the Art newspaper. There is also a variety of special exhibitions in addition to the museum’s standard collections.

New York has one more museum that rated in the Top 10 Art Galleries in the World. It is the Museum of Modern Art, rated Number 7. There were over three million visitors to this site in 2010. The displays at this site reflect the modern world with paintings, sculptures, and graphics of all kinds. Besides the exhibitions, the museum features many lectures and films that are related to modern art.

Rocking Horse and Rider

This beautiful painting is so different and unique I have never seen another one even  come close to this one. The colors used are gorgeous and the figures are magnificent! This is a true beauty. It is signed but I can not read it to well, it looks like
Ryetroni. This painting does not look that
old to me. But it's gorgeous and would look beautiful framed.
Unframed, plain canvas back.

Ethel Mae Blyth - Barrymore

Beautiful old, old painting on canvas (not a colored photograph). Purchased at an estate sale outside of Philadelphia, PA. Unique antique frame measuring at 21 X 25. Canvas measures at 20 X 16. The most angelic lil girl, bows in hair, posing as she is leaning on a chair. The woman who had the sale was consumed with interest in the Barrymore family. She said this oil was from around the 1880's and was Ethel Mae Blyth - Barrymore ...I have nothing to back this up so the sale is as is - The oil is in fair shape, there are holes & tears - looks like water damage on back but the oil painting itself does not look like it had water damage. Someone who knows what they are doing may be able to restore this piece.

Cain and Abel

Old Master oil/canvas painting depicting Cain and Abel. For your consideration is an intriguing, circa 1800s painting depicting the biblical story of Cain and Abel. Painting, which is oil on unframed canvas, measures 15 x 18.5 inches. Condition: Some paint loss around the edges, in a couple vertical folds as well as a tear in the upper right hand corner. This work, which comes fresh to the market from a Washington D.C. estate, is something of an enigma. At least 19th century, possibly earlier, this appears to be a study or preparatory drawing for a larger, more advanced work. While the style is somewhat primitive at first glance, there is a subtlety of stroke and nuance which suggests a very good hand working quickly. The style is, to these eyes, reminiscent of the early 19th century Romanticism of Fuselli and Blake, with the strength of the emotion captured more important than the realism of the scene depicted.

WOODCUT 1862
Signed  ALBRECHT DURER

Wonderful Antique WOODCUT by Albrecht DURER "The Great Passion" "The Lamentation". Early 19th century original print from the first edition of 1510. Signed in block with the monogram The Original Antique Woodcut - famous and museum rare edition by Amsler & Ruthard, 1868, Berlin. That edition, printed directly from restored original woodblock, is considered one of the best and even later editions of 1910- a copy from this sells for $6,000-10,000 a piece! A woodcut " The Last Supper" from a series of 16 woodcuts of 1510-1511 from Durer's "The Great Passion" Series! Woodcut # B.13 M 122b This art work is characterized by their tendency toward spaciousness and serenity. The woodcut is full of enigmatic, allusive, iconographic details. Original size with full margins, fine condition, acid free matting! Size: 17 by 12 1/2 inches image is slightly less (395 by 277 mm) Very nice impression, good contrast, just a very slight age aging. The woodcut is not framed. Albrecht Durer ) (May 21, 1471 - April 6, 1528) was a German painter, printmaker and theorist from Nuremberg. His prints established his reputation across Europe when he was still in his twenties, and he has been conventionally regarded as the greatest artist of the Renaissance in Northern Europe ever since. His well-known works include the Apocalypse woodcuts, Knight, Death, and the Devil (1513), Saint Jerome in his Study (1514) and Melencolia I (1514), which has been the subject of extensive analysis and interpretation.

His watercolors mark him as one of the first European landscape artists, while his ambitious woodcuts revolutionized the potential of that medium. Durer's introduction of classical motifs into Northern art, through his knowledge of Italian artists and German humanists, have secured his reputation as one of the most important figures of the Northern Renaissance. This is reinforced by his theoretical treatise which involve principles of mathematics, perspective and ideal proportions.  Durer began the Great Passion in 1496-97; Strauss thinks it quite possible that The Flagellation (Bartsch 8, Strauss 37),was the first print in the series. Over the next few years, Durer added six additional woodcuts, and the seven were sold as single sheets. Durer returned to the series c. 1510, adding 4 more woodcuts, and published the series with a frontispiece and a Latin text by Benedictus Chelidonius printed on the verso of the prints. Other works in the series include The Agony in the Garden (c. 1496-97, though possibly 1498: B. 6, S. 38), The Deposition of Christ (c. 1496-97: B. 12, S. 39), Ecce Homo (1498: B. 9, S. 58); The Bearing of the Cross (c. 1498-99: B. 10, S. 59), The Lamentation (c. 1498-99: B. 13, S. 60), The Crucifixion (c. 1498: B. 11, S. 61), The Last Supper (dated 1510: B. 5, S. 148); The Betrayal of Christ (dated 1510: B. 7, S. 149), The Harrowing of Hell (dated 1510: B. 14, S. 150), The Resurrection (dated 1510: B. 15, S. 151), Christ as the Man of Sorrows Mocked by a Soldier (c. 1511: B. 4, S. 157). Although The Trinity (dated 1511: B. 122, S. 164) was not bound up with the other sheets of the Large Passion, in size, in style, and in subject matter, it is one with the late sheets of the series. Durer interrupted his work on the Large Passion to work on his other great series, The Apocalypse (c. 1498, republished with new works 1511) the Life of the Virgin (c. 1501-2, completed and published 1511), the Small Woodcut Passion
(c. 1508-1510, published 1511),
and the Engraved Passion (c. 1506-1510).
